Book Description: Palms that grow in Canada? Bananas that overwinter in Michigan? Although the voice of authority might say, "You can't grow those plants here," author Dave Francko says: "Plants can't read the information on their tags." Based on years of first-hand observations and research, this book provides real-world information to help adventurous gardeners grow plants they never before dreamed possible.
Gardening: From chore to obsession: After many visits to southern California, I was tired of envying their plant options so I did some serious internet searches to find tropical plants or those with a tropical feel that will grow in zone 6. I found enough useful information to get started but not enough feel confident. Some gardening tips were contradictory and there were big "how to'" gaps as well. I actually found this book through those searches. It is a great read and I now feel I have the tools create a backyard that I can truly be excited about. I only wish that it spent less space on crepe myrtles and other southeastern plants and more space on hardy tropicals. But he wasn't writing it for me so I'll stick with 5 stars.
great reading!: very informative book for gardeners who like to grow plants that are not common to their zone. David has already made all the mistakes, and tells you what really works.
Thorough, through and through: After numerous trips to Florida and parts of the Caribbean I had developed a homesickness for the exotic. I bought the book and read it three times before gaining enough confidence to act. Two windmills, a mexican fan and one washingtonian later, I'm seeing surviving palms in my yard. If you're looking for good science for gardening, this is your book.
Great for Tropical Gardens in Non-Tropical Regions: David Francko has done his research through trial-and-error and has written a great book, listing palms and plants that may grow in your region with a little TLC.
Best Resource For Gardening in Colder Climates: Anyone attempting to change their landscaping to something that turns heads when passing by, must purchase Dr. Francko's book, "Palms Won't Grow Here and Other Myths." I run a small business that works with the Trachycarpus Fortunei in Reno, Nv, and this book is my encyclopedia for Cold-Hardy Palms. The book explains the easiest ways to keep fungus, cold winter wind and pests away from your trees so that they look beautiful year-round. The book also gives examples of many species that can be tried in colder climates. Each climate zone is given, so you can easily find what zone you are in, and get planting. Enjoy!
