Amazon.com Review: Open the front cover and the first two pages you see contain the Index of Signs and Symptoms, from Abdomen (painful, swollen, distended, and tucked up) to Weight loss, Wheezing, and Whining (continual). There's a comprehensive index in back, of course, running the gamut from Abortion to Zinc-Responsive Dermatosis, which is all very useful, but when your pooch is in pain, it's great to be able to turn, with the minimum of folderol, to the page that says to relax, it's nothing a bit of extra grooming won't fix, or alternatively to hightail it over to the vet hospital. It's a wonderful reference for any dog owner, with chapters on emergencies (such as burns, dehydration, and poisoning), as well as worms, infectious diseases, skin care, and canine eyes, ears, and nose. There are chapters on the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems, the nervous, musculoskeletal, and urinary systems, plus dog sex, whelping, puppy pediatrics, geriatrics, and chapters on cancers and medications. In short, it covers every health dimension a dog owner might want to know more about, identifies the possible causes, helps you determine the severity of the condition, and indicates what treatments or actions to take to best insure your dog's good health. --Stephanie Gold
fast & easy referrence: written in a style that is easy to use and understand. a great referrence book to have on hand for everyday problems that your dogs may incounter that don't really need the attention of a vet,or in non-emergencies when a vet is unavailable for a day or so (weekends, holidays etc.) as the owner of two english bulldogs i liked the fact that it points out breed specific problems and which ones should be brought to a vets attention.very much worth the purchace price.
Not a first aid book, but saved my dog's life: As a previous reviewer said - it isn't formatted as an emergency first aid book, but is a thorough at home manual for dog owners regarding dog health. That being said - this book saved my dog's life when he consumed rat poison because they did have a quick to find (thank you index) section on how to induce vomiting. I didn't have time to surf the internet. My dog had consumed over 20 pellets of fish flavored rat poison. I was able to get a huge amount out of his system within 10 minutes of his consuming it. I still had to take him to the vet where some residue was still found in his system, but it could have been much worse without this book and the fact that I had hydrogen peroxide on hand.
Excellent book: Very helpful book, easy to use, full of information about different dog diseases and ailments. I highly recommend this book hand in hand with: The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats (Prevention Pets) These books should be in every dog owners' home.
Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook: I have a couple of paperback first aid books for dogs but I wanted something more comprehensive. We live in a rural area so a quick trip to the vet not possible. This does not take the place of seeing a vet when necessary, but the book gives easy to understand answers for many everyday problems and well organized.
Great Book: This book is very well written and very informative, I have recommened this to my friends.
