These Love Letters were only available in Japan at first, but through producer Yasohachi '88' Itoh's new label it is now available in the UK. At 77 years, Haynes is an extremely energetic drummer for an old man (or even a young man). In the old days, he played with Bird, Trane and Miles, as well as leading his own line-ups for over 40 years. Recorded in New York, this was planned as a trio session, but then a few old friends dropped into the studio. A violent tattoo launches the well-muscled opener "The Best Thing for You", working into the grit and grip of Dave Holland's bass strings. It's a self-contained sally that still finds time for Joshua Redman to deliver his nonchalant yet forceful tenor saxophone solo. On "That Old Feeling", John Scofield's guitar is on its most nostalgic amplifier setting as he solos with fluid grace. Haynes is now skimming lightly with brushes, turning to shimmering cymbal work for the introduction to "Afro Blue". Scofield returns, unfolding with a cool, detailed logic, filling his solo with delicately feathered strikes before leaving with a long, hanging note. Even though the guitarist dominates again on the bright and breezy "Stompin' at the Savoy", this is still emphatically Roy's album, his drum kit recorded with full bass presence. As Haynes makes his rickety progress around the skins, he's busy all the time, supporting, emphasising, filling in details and investigating each tuned timbre. The whole set bristles with nervous energy, wonderfully harnessed by its sensitive production. --Martin Longley
