At the centre of LeapFrog's philosophy is the importance of encouraging children to learn, and to create the environment and the experiences necessary for learning to take place. To this end, the Phonics Radio (one of a range of pre-school learning aids) is designed to make learning fun and to prepare children for school. The Phonics Radio plays tunes aimed at teaching letters and phonics. Thirty songs and rhymes are included as well as a mystery tune game, which together teach letter names, sounds, and the association between letters and objects, and sounds and words. For example, press "R" (for Rabbit) and it plays "Row, Row, Row your boat"; press "O" (for Octopus) and it plays "Old MacDonald". The Radio is brightly coloured, eye catching and robust, complete with carrying handle on top, just right for little hands. LeapFrog recommend the radio for children aged 18 months and above, but help will be needed by those at the youngest end of the range. An extremely good instruction booklet accompanies the radio, which adults should read and retain. This is an excellent, educational toy, and one that should provide hours of fun. --Susan Naylor
