Rahul Sharma's Music of the Himalayas may have been recorded in Turin, but it's intensely redolent of the land of its origin. This young virtuoso on the santoor--the hammered zither--is both the son and erstwhile pupil of the great santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who was largely responsible for the dramatic recent rise in this lovely instrument's status. Until 1960, it was regarded as a humble folk instrument: Pandit Sharma developed its repertoire along classical lines, so that it's now on a par with the sitar. Two of the pieces here are based on traditional Kashmiri melodies; one is based on a Sufi style peculiar to that region; the last is an ambitious new composition, in which the santoor is backed by a range of folk percussion. Sharma's achievement is to create a beguiling simplicity that--once you've succumbed to its leisurely pace--is almost guaranteed to induce a trance. --Michael Church
