Havana resident Baloy has been singing for over four decades, steeped in the sound of the 1950s son that he sneaked in to see when he was a boy. His first career peak was just before the revolution killed off the US tourist trade, but Felix soared once more in the late 1970s, as part of Orquesta Reve and then Son 14. Now, his much delayed solo debut is given a gleaming production by Afro-Cuban All-Stars linchpin and Sierra Maestra founder Juan De Marcos Gonzalez. Baloy's pattering delivery sends tongue-twisting lines bobbing and ducking around the already sinuous beat, his nimble quaver backed by a spirited answering chorus. The younger All-Stars division is featured throughout, trumpets cutting crisply, trombones purring boldly, underpinned by a dense percussion chatter. Baloy still entertains the notion of surprise, introducing "I'm The Sentimental One" with muted fuzz guitar and distant horn fanfares, then giving "Ven A Bailar Cha Cha Cha" a sophisticated strings/flute charanga glide and going for a rootsy vocal/percussion ride-out on "Have Mercy, I Can't Take Any More!". Standout solos come from agile trombonist Jesus Ramos ("The Bad Thing About Hypocrisy") and fluid pianist David Alfaro ("Your Love Is Everything"). --Martin Longley
