Dr Seuss' children's story always possessed a musical quality. This movie adaptation throws everything into the pot to appeal to most tastes. What's interesting about the approach is having more typically adult-oriented artistes mixing in for the kiddies. Barenaked Ladies get a little Sesame Street wholesomeness going ("Green Christmas" with Jim Carrey), Smash Mouth offer an infectious rhythmically propelled warning about being good for Santa ("Better Do it Right") and The Eels enjoy a scratchy whine about commercialism ("Christmas is Going to the Dogs"). In between are jokey dialogue extracts and an OTT Carrey version of the classic "You're a Mean One Mr Grinch". With so much upbeat fun being had, the dreamy vocals of N Sync ("You Don't Have to be Alone") and Faith Hill ("Where Are You Christmas?") don't really seem to belong. The album's second half is orchestral score from James Horner, seemingly having the most fun since Honey I Shrunk the Kids. Everything comes together best in "Stealing Christmas" as narrator Anthony Hopkins and Carrey interact over highly comedic underscore. --Paul Tonks
