Placido Domingo has gone to Vienna (where he is more popular than Luciano Pavarotti) every December since 1992 for a televised Christmas concert that is transmitted to a vast international audience. In this program, taped last year before an enthusiastic audience, he is joined by crossover artist Brightman (best known for her work in the compositions of her former husband Andrew Lloyd Webber), and Belgian and Italian pop idols Lotti and Coccianti (who is also a composer). The program, beautifully sung in a variety of styles and languages, includes traditional favorites ("Deck the Hall," "Adeste Fideles," "Away in a Manger," "Silent Night," etc.) and modern compositions, among which "Walking on Air" and "First of May" stand out. "Il Re Gesú," composed by Placido Domingo Jr., gets a particularly fervent performance from Placido Domingo, Sr.--and actually deserves it. --Joe McLellan
