Despite a long list of guest names, Susan McKeown's Bushes & Briars is a deliberately low key, almost old-fashioned album. Although a product of the same Irish-American scene responsible for Eileen Ivers, Solas, Cherish The Ladies et al, Susan McKeown is a far different proposition. Not for McKeown the odd excursion into jazzy drum & bass or heavy metal hip-hop--just a bunch of great songs and great playing. Within the minimalist structure, however, come enough moments of genuine innovation to keep the non-purists happy. The brass touches on the title track are reminiscent of June Tabor's recent work (although this came first) and the variety of instruments are deployed to great effect. MckEown herself carries the album fa! irly and squarely, investing the material on offer (an inspired mix of Irish, Gaelic, English & Scottish) with the sort of dramatic delivery that it deserves but so often lacks. A voice to rank alongside the aforementioned Tabor, Sandy Denny and Anne Briggs in the folk roll call, Susan McKeown more than deserves to take her place in the limelight. --Phil Udell
