The good news is that Al Jourgensen from Ministry was not put in charge of producing this Reverend Horton Heat album. After his hack job on Liquor in the Front, it's no wonder this Texas psycho-billy trio opted for a real producer (Thom Panunzio) rather than a rock star. As a result, It's Martini Time sounds amazing! The bad news is that the album is an up-and-down affair. The blazing, wide-open rockers totally kick ass, while "loungy" tunes such as the title track come off sounding a little too contrived. Thankfully, a couple of hilarious moments--particularly on the homoerotically themed "Cowboy Love"--provide some welcome comic relief. Overall, though, there are more heavy-hitting rock songs on It's Martini Time than on previous releases; the Rev's country/blues/rockabilly roots are being subdued behind a wall of distortion and jackhammer drumming. That's not to say this record doesn't have some classic moments. Your average Reverend Horton Heat fan will no doubt dig the energy and find the subpar songs easy enough to ignore. --Adem Tepedelen
