Vitamins and minerals lie at the heart of Dr Weil's theories on healthy living. In Vitamins and Minerals, the eccentric doctor answers questions on which supplements are helpful in general and also for specific medical conditions. Once again, his antioxidant cocktail--also detailed in two other books of the Ask Dr Weil series, Women's Health and Your Top Health Concerns--forms the basis of all the supplements he believes are necessary for maximum health. Even the most avid follower of vitamin trends would be unlikely to have heard of all the supplements considered in this book, which answers frequently asked readers' queries. Indeed, some of the substances examined are unavailable in the United Kingdom. Surprisingly, Weil is unconvinced by some of the more in vogue alternative remedies. Blue-green algae, reputed to boost energy, and chromium--which many claim can help with weight loss, lower cholesterol and improve blood fats--both get the thumbs down. The variants of the minerals and vitamins included in this book necessitate more jargon and make it less reader friendly than other books in the series. Many of the questions cross over and so, unless you definitely want a book on dietary supplements, I would try others in the series first. --Carole Butterworth
